Class Log - Practical Uses for Magic in the Modern Day
Who: Urtz, her students, and anyone else who wants to sit in/see her in her office.
What: Practical Uses for Magic in the Modern Day

[It was the first day of class and Urtz was feeling great. Her Magic 101 class had went went and she was sure her Practical Magic class would be even better. Currently she's standing in front of the chalkboard but behind a desk with a stack of syllabuses on it. Whenever a student walks in, she greets each of them politely before asking them to take one as they find a seat they like.
Once it reaches 1 o'clock the door is closed and class can begin.]
Once again, hello everyone. I am a new professor here at this wonderful academy. My name is Lady Urtz Cromwell. If you wish to call me "Professor", I won't stop but you, but Lady Cromwell or Professor Cromwell is preferred. You'll find, both in life and in my class, that a little bit of respect can go a long way.
[She steps out behind the desk and makes her way to the front row.]
Now then, this class is something I came up with on my own. Some of you may see magic as a way to primarily fight again Nightfall. While offensive magic is important, there are many other uses for spells and magic overall. Things that will help you in your everyday life or that can get you out of a problematic situation. For example, one of my personal favorite spells is Et Digitos Magum. This allows you to create a hand of magic which you can control as easily as if it were your own. It can move quite a distance away from you, can't be damaged, and is an excellent way to start making spells your own.
General spells like this will be taught in this class, but a class like this needs to be tailored to its students. So I'd like to hear a little bit from each of you. Your dreams, goals, and the like. I'll try to incorporate ways to help in my lesson plan. Now, if there aren't any questions... [She gestures towards the class.] I'd like to hear from each of you.

Light magic has a great deal of uses, whether combative or defensive, but it is best served by having access to light in some form to draw energy. I intend to broaden my knowledge so I may have other options if need be. We do not have the luxury of assuming all the skills we currently know are invulnerable when Nightfall comes.

[She doesn't want any of these kids to assume they're only role is as child soldiers. Yes, they are being trained to help save the world, but that isn't the only reason they're here. And if any of them aren't up to it, it's not like they're going to be forced to do so.]

[She does want to provide him, and other students, with abilities and spells that they can use even later on in their lives. Otherwise her "practical magics" won't be very practical. Granted, there's not a whole lot she can do when someone wants to live out a normal life, but her general spells should be good enough if that's the case.]

[He knows that there will be other times he will be needed to fight and defend, just as he did before coming to the Academy, but would like to think it will be as peaceful as it could be for the time that it is.]

I am hoping that the variety of spells and techniques can be expanded upon with time.

Will these spells be practical in terms of our own use or will you provide a subject to build them around?

[She reaches for the blackboard and picks up a piece of chalk. Off in the corner she draws several lines of varying lengths, which transform and combine to make various shapes and illustrate her point.]
They will be practical on a general level, with the exception of specific spells added for the sake of individuals in the class who requested them. You will need to not only perform the spells I teach in class, but also apply them to various problem solving tests throughout the semester.
[For this example, the lines form a stick figure trapped in a cage. Then the image is duplicated several more times. In one case, it turns to a gas and fades through the bars. Another figure drinks some kind of liquid and smashes through. Another transforms the cage into a cat, picks it up, then walks away.]
While I would not say this is an advanced class per se, I will say that this is one of the most important classes you will take at this academy. I am not simply teaching you spells. I am teaching you how to think for yourselves and utilize everything you have at your disposal to achieve your goals.
