Combat Training - Rune Armors
Who: Kyosuke, OTA
What: Rune Armor Basic Training
When: January Combat Lessons
Where: The Arena of Trials
Warning: Teenagers with giant robots, what could possibly go wrong?
It was uncertain who, exactly, at the Federation had authorized this but someone certainly did. And so it was that Kyosuke, early in his tenure as Combat Instructor, brought an entire class to the Arena of Trials. Waiting for them were four Rune Armors assembled before them.
Kyosuke waited for the students to assemble stone-faced, before beginning the lesson with little preamble.
"What you see before you are known as RPT-007, the Gespenst Mk. II M. These are Rune Armors produced primarily within the United States for Supernatural Response forces that require additional firepower. You'll see a number of them active within the US, UN and EU forces. They're cheap, stable, and reliable. While they do utilize Magi-core Drives for the power source, the base armor and equipment is entirely non-magical. While many of you possess a number of potent abilities, there may come a time when you are required to face something of greater size and power - these armors can significantly increase your combat potential and capabilities."
"Today, we'll be focusing on the basics - how to pilot a Rune Armor. Movement and mobility. As there are four units, everyone will have 15 minutes to try it out before swapping to the next group. Today's class is scheduled for three hours, so that should provide ample time for everyone to get accustomed to the armors. If we have time left and you show particular aptitude, we may get a bit more ambitious and try some combat maneuvers. I expect good things, Daybreak. Let's begin.
A. Basic Maneuvering
While Rune Armors are not completely removed from regular movement, they can be a bit tricky. Within the confines of the armor, it mimics your personal movements on a far grander scale. While this means that a lot of your personal skill and maneuverability can easily be utilized within the armor, it's not exactly one-for-one, more exaggerated movements can easily throw off the balance of the armor and send you to the ground. For students hoping to master these machines, they'll need to learn to keep their movements constrained and minimal for optimal results.
B. Advanced Maneuvering
Students that show particular facility with Rune Armor movement will be moved to more advanced trials - in this case, a basic obstacle course. Students will need to maneuver their armor under a length of wire barricade and then climb a large ledge. Simple, really. Or at least so it looks - it requires a lot more precision than basic walking.
C. Mock Battle
If there are at least four students who show promise, Kyosuke will permit a mock battle. The Gespensts will be armed with paintball-loaded rifles and giant foam bats in the shape of a short-sword and be permitted to assault each other, either as a free-for-all or a 2v2 battle. If students are feeling especially cocky, they may also challenge Kyosuke to a 3v1 match.
This is not recommended.

At least until Kyosuke closed the hatch and she realized that this thing is WAY more cramped than the cockpit of a gundam looked on TV.
"Okay. Just...take a step." She told herself. "Restrained motions. Move slowly. Don't fall over."
Her Gespenst took a step, but it was WAY too big, and the whole assembly of metal and magic fell over in slow motion as she tried to over correct in the other way.
no subject
"Not bad. I can see what you were trying to accomplish and you have the right idea. Slow is good, but also keep your movements small and restrained."
no subject
TV didn’t show how much the cockpit jostled with every step either. But on the other hand, you can’t fall off the ground.
“It’s fine. It’s just standing up now instead of walking.”
She tried moving again, this time with the arms. The gespenst waved its arms wildly on the ground before she finally figured out how to get it to move how she wanted. Then it was just a matter of breaking down standing up into individual movements and figuring out each one in sequence. It took her several minutes to get the damn thing upright, but she made it.
“I have to think about every single action instead of just doing it. It’s weird.”

Kohaku tried taking a step, and didn't fall over this time, though she was still incredibly awkward and slow as she was focusing more on staying upright than she was at looking cool.
"I'm not gonna get to use one of these things in a fight, am I? Like, we MUST have actual professionals for this kind of thing."

Kyosuke's tone was pretty matter-of-fact, not that that was much of a deviation from the norm.

Still. Perhaps she'll learn something from the experience (and perhaps, in a way, it's an attempt to experience something outside herself.
She still thinks about the vessels. It's not something that goes away. In part, it's why she's even here at all.)
Her first few attempts are clumsy, as she overcompensates and swings too wide. She has quick enough reflexes to catch herself, but those, too, are large movements that send her tumbling across the ground uncontrollably. Too fast, rather than too slow.
no subject
"You're used to moving pretty fast, aren't you?"
no subject
She sees no reason not to answer honestly, but she doesn't see the need to explain herself much.
"Yes. A hunter needs to move quickly, so I do."
Whether this is the type of hunter that Kyosuke is used to, or a different and more personal definition, she doesn't elaborate.
no subject
"Why don't you come down and show me how fast you usually run? There may be a better way for you, but it's a little unorthodox."
no subject
Rather than waste breath answering, she uses the armor as a sort of anchoring point for her movement (given the Arena has little in the way of natural obstacles) as she stoically demonstrates her usual range of movement. Dashing to and fro, leaping high, and maneuvering through the air at a rapid rate that indicates she's both agile and highly reactive.
She comes to a stop in front of Kyosuke. The only sign of her exertion is that she's breathing harder than normal.
"That should be sufficient," she finally says.

My apologies.

"You have experience with a different kind of armor?"
no subject
Kokoro freezes, followed by a sigh.
"The one I use is significantly smaller and acts more as armour one wears. I had thought this exercise would work much the same, but the controls prove otherwise."

"I see. Because they compensate, and so regular actions are unwieldy. How can one keep all of this in mind all the time?"

When he gets to the left leg, he swings it back and forth a few times, hops out, makes hand motions at the knee joint, twists a few times and hops back in to repeat the swings. If there's any difference, it's imperceptible to anyone outside the cockpit, but it satisfied Rex, who proceeds to complete the complete both courses without much trouble.

"You don't seem like a pilot. An engineer, perhaps?"
no subject
"I do what is called of me."
In his mind, that explains it all- he engineers when engineering needs to be done and pilots when piloting needs to be done. Etc.

Wildcard!
"All right, hoist her up!"
Rolling out from underneath the arm of a rune armor, she slowly pulls herself up to her feet. Wiping up a few smudges of paint and from her cheek with a rag, Excellen dusts herself off before giving Kyosuke an enthusiastic thumbs up. "That should be the last one. These babies are all combat ready! I made sure you'll see the rounds from far away, too, in case some of the kids decide to get adventurous."
"Plus, I put fun a little surprise in the training sabers," She says, with a grin. She definitely didn't hide paint capsules inside the foam bats. No, that would be silly......

Kyosuke suddenly feels bad for the mechanics. He knows that smile - and what generally comes afterward.

Kyosuke, she's not completely heartless, give her some credit.
"...Some of them." Maybe a little credit. "It'll be fine. Everybody likes a good hazing now and then. It's good for morale!"
