JUNE IN-SERVICE

June In-Service
Log Comm | Network Comm | OOC Comm | Navigation

While the monthly in-service is generally held in a different part of campus each time, this month’s isn’t on campus at all. Instead, in light of both the recent successes in Daybreak’s mission and the recent stresses involved in getting that far, the Academy has decided to reward both staff and students by renting out an arcade in the outer edges of Soleil, allowing everyone to visit and have a nice time, with the staff eventually retiring to a back room to conduct their monthly meeting in private as the students continue to enjoy themselves. Jaunty Rick’s is, despite the mildly dubious name, a solidly quality establishment with a bowling alley, a roller-skating rink, and a number of classic games to lose vast amounts of tokens on.

Just don’t try the claw machine. We’re pretty sure that thing’s rigged.

The staff meeting room is specifically a private room usually reserved for birthday parties; as a result, neon glow in the dark decorations seem to cover every inch of wall and ceiling. While slightly on the tacky side, it’s still more than sufficient to suit the meeting’s needs...though, with the faculty being as they are, stealthy students can easily listen in.
The major items on the agenda are as follows.

While the Tower of Adamant has been known for being aloof, the lack of communication for months has made the oldest faculty members and more than a few seers furrow their brows with concern. An emissary was sent to speak with the faculty, and returned with the news that they received no response, it’s recommended that an investigative group should be sent out to make sure they’re still alive.

As per Professor Emille’s suggestion, some of the more outdoor-minded members of the staff have taken it upon themselves to arrange a camping trip to take advantage of the wonderful weather. While the discussion is ongoing and often heated in the staff room, there are rumors of some kind of scavenger hunt being the chosen activity.

The strange mark continues to appear in the general population, so far all the individuals manifested powers they did not have before, and there is something even more alarming going on with these poor souls: many of them suddenly turned up missing, with the hallmarks of professional abductors at work. A few confused eyewitness accounts strongly suggest that the kidnappers are not of any mortal organization - they may even be vampires.

A.
Ever played Pac-Man? DDR? Any of those endless amounts of racing games that all seemed to be more about losing control of the vehicle and causing pixelated mayhem than successfully crossing the finish line? Well, if you haven’t, here’s your chance. Rumor has it there’s secretly one of the original Polybius game machines hidden under more innocuous casing somewhere in the arcade, but that’s probably not true. And even if it is, it’s probably not as dangerous as the urban legends said it was. Or if video games aren’t your speed, there’s the more physical options- skee ball, bowling, bumper cars… it’s an arcade, it’s there for you to have fun. Go wild. ...just try not to cause any property damage. And if you’re on the mini-golf course, please don’t swim in the water hazards. Even at such a nice arcade, that’s just not sanitary.

B.
Every time you win a game, it spits out a small amount of tickets. These can be exchanged for overwhelming nostalgia for the mid to early 90s a number of fun prizes up at the front counter: cool figurines or pens with glow in the dark ink for smaller amounts of tickets, giant plush toys and hilarious hats for larger ones. There’s the usual assortment of squishy goo in a can, sticky rubber hands, plastic rings, rubber balls, and various other small toys available. The most impressive and ticket-costly item available is a model rocket the size of a small child. It even has a little astronaut doll inside…

C.
The arcade is full of amusements tucked away in nooks and crannies, and the food is surprisingly good; a cafe provides both pre-made and fresh-made selections of pastries, salads, sandwiches and soups, giving the catering staff a break for once. And, of course, it’s suitably dark enough to make a good arena for hide and seek, or other lower-tech games of that sort. Just for today, Daybreak attendees have a full run of the place to themselves, so they’re free to do whatever they wish.

[Emille's been hard at work thinking about the camping trip for the past few months, so she has a few things to report at this in-service meeting.]

Yes, as for the camping activity. I am aiming for this to occur sometime during the month of July, barring any emergencies that may arise, as we do still have a Herald on the loose. As we have little time until the trip, I would like to gauge your interest in this suggestion:

Who within the faculty would be interested in teaming together to compete against the groups of participating students? You would also be required to do similar activities as they in a race to see who can arrive at the campsite faster. [Getting a little friendly competition going might stir up some interest...]

I wouldn't mind, I think it'd give the students a little more motivation to participate. People do like to outshine their elders.

[ Ekkehardt is currently, in a rare moment of obnoxiousness, constantly sticking a sticky hand to the ceiling while he talks. Occasionally, it goes off target, and slaps itself on the table, onto errant paperwork, or past someone's face onto the wall instead. ]

I don't know what to make of these marks, but if people are being kidnapped for them, that's a higher priority problem.

I don't suppose anyone has any good connections for investigating vampires? [ He's not going to ask Sherlock, after that whole..thing...with Dracula. ]

[Jailbreak is carefully fiddling with something, but she doesn't look up as she talks.]

Sure, I know a guy who knows a guy. Couple contacts in the morgue who got a side hustle getting blood that nobody's gonna miss, an ex-girlfriend or two who do the whole "queen of the night" deal on weekends, that sorta thing.

[On closer examination, it proves to be a day-glo green sticky hand of her own, slipped out of one of her many pockets. She's tugging at it carefully, figuring out the reach, and examining the angles of the room surreptitiously from under her lashes.]

Can't promise they'll know anything, but it's worth a shot. I'll ask 'em if they've heard about it.

[Calculating the trajectory, waiting for the opportunity, aim... and...]

Hah, sticky-five!

[Jail fires off her sticky hand at exactly the right moment to have it collide with Ekkehardt's, tiny rubber palm to tiny rubber palm.]

[She looks prouder about this achievement than anything she's done in the past week, and they all found out three days ago they're visibly pushing back the apocalypse.]

There's a reason why I hadn't been using my real name in a very long time, I did not make any sort of friends among 'my kind' as it were - I made it a sort of business to ruin their nights.

And no doubt the news of my sire's unfortunate demise - [said it enough sarcasm dripping that could bottle it] - would have spread already so we cannot use his name as leverage.

[He'll remain quiet until Sherlock speaks - as his own connections in the supernatural world are a bit weak - but he will eventually clear his throat once that's done.]

Do we have any general statistics on those kidnapped? Their locations, general health, anything of that nature?

Though the marks are certainly worrisome, I believe it would be best to attempt to discover if the victims that are taken are within a certain 'area of operations' for our kidnappers.

...Of course, it may very well be that it will end up as useless data, but - I believe it's worth looking into, at any rate.

Okay, let's get this down now- who had what in the pool? I know somebody here had money on 'em going straight to shit before Nightfall hit, but we're gonna need to nail down specifics before there's any payouts.

We all know like half of you are gonna feel weird and guilty about making wagers over these people's possible gruesome deaths once you find out what actually happened to 'em, so let's go ahead and get your bets in now while they're all still distant hypotheticals you only feel for in the abstract, all right?

Ah... I'd rather not participate in any wagers on this subject but...

They did have a few artifacts on hand that were suspect. I remember some sort of mummified creature in particular, mainly because it appeared as if some sort of body was being created to host it.

Though I admit I had little time to examine it, so appearances are all that I have to go on.

If there is one good thing about this plush form it's that it's easily mistaken for that of a child. A very, very small one, but a child in costume nonetheless. There is no need for them to disguise themself to travel into soliel for this day of celebration.

Of the many not good things is the fact they are that small, and reaching anything higher than a normal person's knee proves to be something of an ordeal. They struggle to reach the controls of games, having already impulsively slotted in their coins without first checking. They make plaintive noises and nearly give up. But then they see the prize counter. It is a dazzling display of gloriously useless junk in all manner of light and color, framing, like angels in a heavenly painting, a rocket settled in a central beam of harsh light. They race back to the games, grabbing the nearest taller person by the pant leg and tugging.

"Lift me up! Lift me up!"

C

Later, they watch other students go about, playing this game and that. It looks fun, but they don't join in. They don't know what to do. Even with their hosts, they could only play solitary games. They don't know the rules of these, and after the fiasco of April fools, they suspect that any attempt to join in would be... unwelcome.

They kick their feet, fidget, look about, but inevitably their gaze always comes back. They think of the many years of staying alone like this that lay ahead.

Lia looks down when she feels someone tugging at her jeans, then blinks when she spots Sira there, not recognizing them. Despite that, however, it doesn't take long for her to nod with a wide grin. Might as well help out, right?

"Sure thing!" With that, she moves to scoop them up. "Which game?"

The light within the hood they wear resolves itself into an expression of delight. There are nice people here after all!

They let out a cheer as they're lifted, arms thrown in the air. But then they falter. A choice. Oh no. Which is the correct one?

"...Which game do you like?" They ask, head tilting.

He generally tends to stay out of Sira's way; their first meeting is, in light of other things he'd learned about Sira later, now significantly more awkward. But he acts on instinct, and obligingly picks the daemon up to look at the game they're interested in. He doesn't quite go as far as to put Sira on his shoulder, but it's easy to make his bandages form a little seat for them to settle on.

"Perhaps you need something to make you able to reach heights like these," he says, after a moment. "I can't imagine it's convenient, having to clamber around all the time."

Sira likewise stays out of the way, but it's not much to do with the first meeting and more to do with the natural inclination to stay away from others-- which works poorly with their equally strong desire to be around anyone at all.

Since the initial fear has passed, they've settled for a grudging tolerance (with a lot of confusion over the kinder gestures) with their Boss. It seems wisest not to toe the line, to make up for all the times they inevitably leap over it without thinking. Ekkehardt on the other hand is hands-off since the contract. He's undeniably connected to the Boss, but doesn't have much interest in being a Boss himself. He's a man who seems to know a lot and is valuable in other ways. They suppose they have... a sort of respect, though they don't imagine it's anything mutual.

And so they're immediately surprised when they register who it is that they've impulsively run to.

"Oh. Hello."

They're lifted on bandages. The pat at them a bit with mitten like hands, just to see how they hold. Then they answer properly.

"It makes my errands harder," They admit. "But I've been making do. It's only a hun--" They stop. They'd earned more years with their stunt. Right. "A bit over a hundred years. I can slip out if it's an emergency."

[Normally, a smaller child wandering around with zero supervision would be a cause for concern, but with the academy having the arcade to itself today, there isn't really anyone around—save any arcade staff that happen to be working this day—to really be concerned with Becky's wandering around the way she is.

With her being less than four feet fall, many of the arcade cabinets have their controls high enough up that she can't really reach them without having something to stand on—and which ones of those she can manage to reach without assistance are difficult for her to play with her having to reach up so much—so, she mostly doesn't play them.

The shorter ones that you can actually sit down at, though, she's all over those, especially the ones that happen to be older games. She spends a considerable time at some of the ticket games, too, though any tickets she acquires are rather unceremoniously passed off to any of the actual children that came out here as well, whenever she comes across any of them.]

C)
[Perhaps unsurprisingly, she does make her way to the café eventually.

First she tries asking for a recommendation, but when that results in being told to try something that's clearly been made to appeal to kids one third of her real age (she should have expected this, really), she opts to just pick something for herself and pays for it—the person manning the counter doing a brief double-take as they catch a glimpse of her ID while she's getting into the little purse she brought with her—before wandering off to the nearest empty table with a tray of sandwiches.

Yes, she plans on eating all of them.]

Today, though...

Well, today he's just indulging himself on the games, apparently. The tickets aren't a huge concern for him, and he seems to prefer things that require skill or accuracy. He can be most often found on the various lightgun machines scattered around the arcade, concentrating intensely on getting a good score, though videogames in general aren't beyond his interests. He'll try anything once, it seems.

He is, despite his intense concentration, smiling a great deal.

Okay, maybe she looks a little too serious repeatedly throwing balls at Feed Big Bertha (and sometimes her aim is off), grumbles at losing the coin pusher ten times in a row, and her attempt at Swamp Stomp leads to her slipping and falling off the machine. She's still having fun! Or trying. Come laugh.]

[b]

[Kokoro lost a few too many tokens to the coin pusher, so she doesn't have a lot of tickets to turn in. Thus you can find her writing calculations on a napkin at the edge of the ticket booth with a frown.]
