EVENT - HALLOW'S EVE DANCE

HALLOW'S EVE DANCE
Log Comm | Network Comm | OOC Comm | Navigation

As October comes to a close, the world of spirits and the world of the living draw ever closer, or so it’s said. In the darkening of the nights ahead, you can almost believe it.

With their usual flair, the Academy has arranged several different types of entertainment for students, staff and visitors alike, running for several days up to the end of October. The month will then be sent off with a bang on Halloween itself, with a ball whose themes and effects are provided by none other than Daybreak’s new student council.

A. HALLOWEEN FESTIVITIES (SOLEIL TOWN SQUARE)
Soleil’s main square has been temporarily commandeered for the use of a festive Halloween fairground, transforming the sunny, cheerful town into something more gothic and autumnal. Traditional fairground games with all manner of prizes are available, with everything from bobbing for apples to shooting Halloween-themed targets in stalls on display. And should you pass through on Halloween itself, you’ll find all manner of costumed trick-or-treaters happy to play pranks or beg for candy - some of them more human than others.

Or, perhaps, you’re one of those very trick-or-treaters. Whether you’re going to the ball or content to do all your socializing here, there’s plenty of room for more costumed party goers to ask for treats or deliver tricks to teachers and students alike.

B. TEST OF COURAGE (SOLEIL AMUSEMENT PARK)
If you’re looking for something that wears more on the nerves, however, Soleil’s amusement park has thrown its doors open and invited the Halloween spirit in. Of particular note is Daybreak’s infamous haunted house challenge, designed and staffed by the Academy’s mercurial faculty. An array of escape rooms, devious traps and seemingly inescapable mazes with scares lurking around every corner, depending on the routes you take, await those brave enough to enter; being a little more restricted doesn’t seem to have lessened their creativity this year.

C. DANCE MACABRE
This year’s Halloween ball is set in the forest within an intertwined ring of trees, each one’s trunk decorated with a frightful face. Their branches interlock to form a windproof wall and weather-resistant roof. The main entrance is easy to spot - it’s the biggest tree of all, and those who step into its frightening facial expression will find that the tree is hollow and allows them access to the party within.

Once inside, party goers will be greeted with laden tables and a floor perpetually in fog. Not to fear, though - those who want to dance will have an elevated, separate stage to show off their footwork. There’s plenty of room to mingle and compliment each other’s costumes, too.

Those who want to escape the rigors of social interaction will find that the specially-made foliage conceals several hidey-holes, away from the main floor. Use them to scare other party goers, have private conversations, and more - it’s up to you.

D. PARTY FOOD
The banquet tables smell divine - while looking utterly revolting, in colors that fruits and vegetables should not be, and disturbingly realistic looking eyeballs and fingers decorating the tops of hors d'oeuvres and desserts, all of them radiating illusion magic for those able to pick it up. Thankfully, each tray had a nice clean label describing what the dish actually is, along with a list of ingredients - an allergic shock might be scary, but it’s not in the spirit of the holiday.
And speaking of spirits, as with previous dances, there is a manned bar with specialty spooky mixes on display, and for those too young or don’t wish to partake, there is hot mulled non-alcoholic cider, punch, and coffee.

E. COSTUME PARTY
What good would a Halloween celebration be without costumes? With the secondhand marketplace and your own ingenuity, the sky's the limit when it comes to dressing up splendidly for the occasion.

What’s more, the student council has arranged two contests - one for mundane costumes, and one for magical ones. Participants are encouraged to display the full effects of their costumes and win over the judges’ hearts with Halloween flair and fervor!

(For official judging, submit your characters' costumes here!)

F. BONFIRES
As the night winds down, the trees suddenly merge together into a giant wicker man that abruptly bursts into flame, laughing maniacally. It then explodes, launching several smaller bonfires across the area and crumbling into a large one that serves as an easy beacon for any lost souls who can’t find their way back without help.

For those who want more privacy or smaller groups to tell scary stories or socialize, they’re free to locate one of the smaller bonfires - or just take the opportunity to wander off into the forest itself. It is, after all, Halloween - who knows who or what you might meet?

As clear as crystal.

[ He sweeps his hat off his head with a flourish, bowing to him and extending a hand.

(It's an invitation, but it's also a concession. What Avery chooses to do once he takes it is something Ekkehardt won't control.)
]

May I have this dance?

[ It's something better suited for a masquerade ball, something more courtly or high-society. But, like Ekkehardt says, those things are a cut above his social station. ]
subconmodo: (H - aggressive mental math)

[personal profile] subconmodo 2019-10-30 05:45 pm (UTC)(link)
[So smug. So damned smug.

It's enough to make his stomach turn, the way he bows like that, like he's some stupid, snobby noble at a ball. He rolls his eyes and takes Ekkehardt's hand, ignoring the bile (and it absolutely is bile. It has to be) that threatens to come up when he does so.]

Impress me and I might be convinced to allow you to lead.

[personal profile] spelleton 2019-10-30 05:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Already issuing challenges, are we? Very well, I accept.

[ The style of dance isn't nearly as regulated as a waltz, this time, though if Avery decides on something more traditional he certainly won't deny him. There's much more freedom. ]

Since you're so intent on leading, why don't you go ahead and set the pace?
subconmodo: (H - How cute...)

[personal profile] subconmodo 2019-10-30 06:18 pm (UTC)(link)
[He's certainly trying to be traditional. It's a bit difficult what with the more modern music playing in the background, though (he never did figure out how one was supposed to dance to this kind of thing).

Even so, he keeps his head held high and a confident grin on his face--fake it til you make it]

What, not even going to try and challenge me for it?
spelleton: (☀ i will carry the light)

[personal profile] spelleton 2019-10-30 06:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought I'd be generous and offer, that's all. But since you insist...

[ He's not so unfair that he's going to force Avery into a style of dance that's utterly unfamiliar to him. That just wouldn't be sporting.

But he picks up the pace to match the music's beat and throws in some more complicated footwork for good measure, pulling Avery along with him and expecting - challenging - him to keep up.
]
subconmodo: (Hard Mode)

[personal profile] subconmodo 2019-10-31 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
[He manages it, but outside the dream he's not quite as graceful. It's been a long, long time since he's actually danced with anyone, and though he knows the steps, he's clearly out of practice.]

You know, it's a shame. I'd probably get in trouble if I used any magic here. It'd make things more interesting.
spelleton: (☀ knights burned away)

[personal profile] spelleton 2019-10-31 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
[ He's not surprised that he's not as graceful. Dreams are easier to mould than reality, in many ways. But he doesn't mind.

He doesn't slow down, but he does simplify things a little. Taking it a bit easier on someone who's out of practice, at least for now.
]

Oh, like you did before?

It would be fun, I admit. But I'd rather not alarm anyone by suddenly pulling out knives on the dance floor. You know how it is.

[ He ought to be responsible. It makes up for Avery's total lack of such things. ]
subconmodo: (H - TIME FOR FUN)

[personal profile] subconmodo 2019-10-31 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
[He nearly trips over his own feet.

It has nothing to do with being out of practice]

Uh... Ground's a bit uneven there. Might want to watch your step.

[Nailed it.]

Of course I know how it is. They never let me have any fun around here! At least in a dream you get to let loose, eh?

[His grin turns a bit manic.

Why is he still dancing.

Ekkehardt actually was there in the dream.

This is a trap. This is totally a trap. What is he doing. Why can't he stop.

Why the fuck does he still want to dance.]
spelleton: no longer pressured to abide (☀ the dead ones in their sleep)

[personal profile] spelleton 2019-10-31 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
I'll keep that in mind. [ He's fairly certain the dance floor is entirely smooth, but what does he know, right. ]

That's because every time you have fun, I always end up patching someone up! But you're right. It's nice to let loose every once in a while.

[ He's carefully not remarking on that edging-on-manic expression because you know what, Avery's going to have to work this one out for himself. ]
subconmodo: (H - Your soul's not THAT important is it)

[personal profile] subconmodo 2019-10-31 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
Please. That's not my fault. Sometimes having a little fun means a few scrapes and bruises. And broken bones. And the occasional decapitation.

[A pause]

Well. Maybe not the last one anymore.
spelleton: (☀ knights burned away)

[personal profile] spelleton 2019-10-31 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
You got some of the way there when you stabbed me in the neck once, but I suppose that doesn't count if it's not the full experience, as it were.

[ His voice is nothing more than amused. Playful, almost, a sharp contrast from his usual serious, disapproving tones (especially around Avery, who gets a lot of them, because of his aforementioned ideas of fun).

But just for tonight - he's letting loose, in his own way.

[personal profile] subconmodo 2019-10-31 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
[he cringes]

Ugh. Don't bring that up. That was just shameful. Forgetting you were dead like that? Really? After all the times I've enjoyed pointing it out, too.
spelleton: that you hear on the breeze (☀ i sing the songs)

[personal profile] spelleton 2019-10-31 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, very well. I'll avoid the topic, if it's such an embarrassment for you. [ He thinks it was funny, in hindsight.

The music changes, something slower and more suited for the kind of dances Avery is experienced with. He slows his pace accordingly, easily falling into step with him despite that mutual prickliness between them.
]
subconmodo: (H - You're kind of rude...)

[personal profile] subconmodo 2019-10-31 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
[Mercy? Really? That just makes it even more humiliating.]

It was your fault anyway, provoking me like that. And I'll bet you knew exactly what you were doing, too.

[His steps become a bit surer at the new pace. Perhaps still too old a dance for the song, but something that can be adapted well enough all the same.]

You've got quite the death wish for a guy who's already dead.

[It's impressive in a way, annoying as it can be sometimes.]
spelleton: no longer pressured to abide (☀ the dead ones in their sleep)

[personal profile] spelleton 2019-10-31 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
[ His grin is sharp and bright and eerie, his eyes burning red. ] You're right about that. I knew exactly what I was doing.

[ That comment about a death wish gets a short laugh. He's easy with laughter today. Normally he'd be easy with smiles too, but it's easy to smile when your face is a skull, so that probably doesn't count. ]

Why wouldn't I? It's already happened. I have the luxury of courting it.

[ Well, courting some things, anyway. Some people. One person, possibly, maybe.

Besides, there's worse things than death, he almost says, and then he doesn't, because it's a nice night and he doesn't want to ruin it with talk like that. Talk that could lead to something more painful.
]
subconmodo: (H - dat ass tho)

[personal profile] subconmodo 2019-10-31 02:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Ha! And people call me irresponsible. What are young, impressionable children supposed to think, seeing you do reckless things like that?

[Ekkehardt is supposed to be the responsible one, after all.]

Maybe I should have a little fun of my own--remind you just how mortality works. I bet I could jump one of the bonfires tonight.
spelleton: (☀ one breach every hundred years)

[personal profile] spelleton 2019-10-31 03:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Knowing your luck, you'd probably set yourself on fire and I'd have to put you out. [ He huffs, shaking his head. ] With all the trouble you've caused me, I should be asking for days off directly from you.

[ He doesn't seem particularly bothered, despite his words. ]

And I try not to do reckless things around young, impressionable children, that's why I can get away with it now and then. [ It's incredibly tempting to say 'except for what I'm doing right now' just to see the look on Avery's face, but that would probably cut this little interlude short, and he wants to let it take its course. ]
subconmodo: (Let's talk about your chances of living.)

[personal profile] subconmodo 2019-10-31 03:13 pm (UTC)(link)
You'd get bored after a week if I stopped making your life harder and you know it. I'm doing you a favor!

[What is he saying. What is he doing.

He hasn't even had anything to drink]
spelleton: that you hear on the breeze (☀ i sing the songs)

[personal profile] spelleton 2019-10-31 03:23 pm (UTC)(link)
[ That gets another laugh. ]

Ah, so you're gracing me with the displeasure of your company?

I didn't know you enjoyed bothering me quite so much! [ He'd basically started antagonizing him since he started working here, but also...Avery just makes life hard for everyone within reach on a regular basis barring a few special exceptions, usually for his own amusement, so.

He's giving Avery a measure of plausible deniability to get out of it.
]

I feel almost flattered, Atchison. Though flattered probably isn't the best word...there's probably some obscure term that describes feeling flattered, but for annoyance instead.
subconmodo: (H - dat ass tho)

[personal profile] subconmodo 2019-10-31 03:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd like to think that's still "flattered." You should be.

[has he ever heard Ekke laugh this much?]

Few people in this world are capable of providing quality entertainment. At least, not without dying! Maybe that's why you're so good at it.
spelleton: no longer pressured to abide (☀ the dead ones in their sleep)

[personal profile] spelleton 2019-10-31 03:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, so I'm good entertainment, am I? Well, that's a step up in opinions. I really am feeling flattered now.

[ The few times he has laughed, something that can be measured in months or seasons when it comes to one Avery Atchison's general vicinity, it's generally mocking or - occasionally - exasperated - rather than something genuinely happy.

But he's free with them tonight, at least. Just this once. Maybe it really is something in the air; maybe it's just this particular day that's good for him.
]

I suppose I should return the compliment, though I'm having a hard time thinking of the worst one I could use. [ There's a light playfulness in his tone. ] Best at giving me more work, perhaps.

[ At this point, it's not even about the dance any more. Movements are auxiliary; something to do with his hands and feet, preoccupying his partner so they can trade barbs back and forth. ]
subconmodo: (H - Please...)

[personal profile] subconmodo 2019-10-31 04:31 pm (UTC)(link)
[Avery's feet come dangerously close to crushing Ekke's own several times, his focus on their banter (on normalcy, if that's even what it is anymore) and the storm in his head making his movements less precise than he would like.

But at least he can claim it was on purpose if he really does make a misstep.]

Ha! That's it? Come now, Ekke, you can do better than that.
spelleton: (☀ let my bones turn to sand)

[personal profile] spelleton 2019-10-31 04:40 pm (UTC)(link)
[ He's quick enough to avoid the missteps, if they happen. But he clearly has a lot on his mind, judging by the way he's moving now.

(Has Avery ever called him that before? He doesn't think he has.)
]

Oh, I'm just getting warmed up, believe me.

Best at annoying me? Wonderful at being an utter nuisance? Excelling at making my life harder in so many versatile ways? Working towards a gold medal at being the world's most ridiculous, injury-prone immortal?

[ Best at being on his mind more than he'd like, no matter how hard he tries? No, he probably can't use that, or Avery would probably bolt...

It's tempting, though. He can't say he doesn't enjoy getting to be the one surprising him for once, after four years of being tormented.

He'll keep it in mind.
]
subconmodo: (H - Cursed Image)

[personal profile] subconmodo 2019-10-31 04:51 pm (UTC)(link)
That's more like it. Keep it up and you might actually graduate from being a stick in the mud.

I'd like to think it's all thanks to my good influence.

[or That's what he's going to say about the puns.

That had been such a welcome surprise]
spelleton: (☀ i will carry the light)

[personal profile] spelleton 2019-10-31 05:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I'm sure you'd like to...

And you'd miss being able to bully me for being straitlaced and responsible, I'm sure. I really couldn't take that away from you. It would be a shame.

[ He likes himself just fine, terrible sense of humor and all. And he likes Avery just fine, too, somehow, despite everything he chooses to be and then some. ]
