EVENT - HALLOW'S EVE DANCE

HALLOW'S EVE DANCE
Log Comm | Network Comm | OOC Comm | Navigation

With their usual flair, the Academy has arranged several different types of entertainment for students, staff and visitors alike, running for several days up to the end of October. The month will then be sent off with a bang on Halloween itself, with a ball whose themes and effects are provided by none other than Daybreak’s new student council.

A. HALLOWEEN FESTIVITIES (SOLEIL TOWN SQUARE)
Soleil’s main square has been temporarily commandeered for the use of a festive Halloween fairground, transforming the sunny, cheerful town into something more gothic and autumnal. Traditional fairground games with all manner of prizes are available, with everything from bobbing for apples to shooting Halloween-themed targets in stalls on display. And should you pass through on Halloween itself, you’ll find all manner of costumed trick-or-treaters happy to play pranks or beg for candy - some of them more human than others.
Or, perhaps, you’re one of those very trick-or-treaters. Whether you’re going to the ball or content to do all your socializing here, there’s plenty of room for more costumed party goers to ask for treats or deliver tricks to teachers and students alike.
B. TEST OF COURAGE (SOLEIL AMUSEMENT PARK)
If you’re looking for something that wears more on the nerves, however, Soleil’s amusement park has thrown its doors open and invited the Halloween spirit in. Of particular note is Daybreak’s infamous haunted house challenge, designed and staffed by the Academy’s mercurial faculty. An array of escape rooms, devious traps and seemingly inescapable mazes with scares lurking around every corner, depending on the routes you take, await those brave enough to enter; being a little more restricted doesn’t seem to have lessened their creativity this year.
C. DANCE MACABRE
This year’s Halloween ball is set in the forest within an intertwined ring of trees, each one’s trunk decorated with a frightful face. Their branches interlock to form a windproof wall and weather-resistant roof. The main entrance is easy to spot - it’s the biggest tree of all, and those who step into its frightening facial expression will find that the tree is hollow and allows them access to the party within.
Once inside, party goers will be greeted with laden tables and a floor perpetually in fog. Not to fear, though - those who want to dance will have an elevated, separate stage to show off their footwork. There’s plenty of room to mingle and compliment each other’s costumes, too.
Those who want to escape the rigors of social interaction will find that the specially-made foliage conceals several hidey-holes, away from the main floor. Use them to scare other party goers, have private conversations, and more - it’s up to you.
D. PARTY FOOD
The banquet tables smell divine - while looking utterly revolting, in colors that fruits and vegetables should not be, and disturbingly realistic looking eyeballs and fingers decorating the tops of hors d'oeuvres and desserts, all of them radiating illusion magic for those able to pick it up. Thankfully, each tray had a nice clean label describing what the dish actually is, along with a list of ingredients - an allergic shock might be scary, but it’s not in the spirit of the holiday.
And speaking of spirits, as with previous dances, there is a manned bar with specialty spooky mixes on display, and for those too young or don’t wish to partake, there is hot mulled non-alcoholic cider, punch, and coffee.
E. COSTUME PARTY
What good would a Halloween celebration be without costumes? With the secondhand marketplace and your own ingenuity, the sky's the limit when it comes to dressing up splendidly for the occasion.
What’s more, the student council has arranged two contests - one for mundane costumes, and one for magical ones. Participants are encouraged to display the full effects of their costumes and win over the judges’ hearts with Halloween flair and fervor!
(For official judging, submit your characters' costumes here!)
F. BONFIRES
As the night winds down, the trees suddenly merge together into a giant wicker man that abruptly bursts into flame, laughing maniacally. It then explodes, launching several smaller bonfires across the area and crumbling into a large one that serves as an easy beacon for any lost souls who can’t find their way back without help.
For those who want more privacy or smaller groups to tell scary stories or socialize, they’re free to locate one of the smaller bonfires - or just take the opportunity to wander off into the forest itself. It is, after all, Halloween - who knows who or what you might meet?

I don't mind the idea of being alone in death. I think that's comforting. It's all stripped away when we die, every expectation anyone has ever held and any claim they've tried to put upon us.
[ She pauses, then launches into a quote, spoken near reverently: ] "Death is power's limit, the moment that escapes it; death becomes the most secret aspect of existence, the most private." Michel Foucault. It's my favourite quote. Once you're dead, nobody can touch you ever again, not really.
[ It's something she spends way too much of her time thinking about and she has to take a short breath to actually get back on topic. ]
Which isn't to say that I don't appreciate the thought of leaving behind a legacy. If you can make yourself known beyond your mortal existence, exercise power over the living even when they have none over you... That's the greatest statement you could make.
no subject
She listens, blinking. It's a different mindset than hers. It surprises her -- it makes sense, in that way something she's never considered can make a lot of sense.]
No one owns a piece of you... I think I see what you mean. But... it's the end, too. I don't know... I feel like death must be lonely. And... I don't really want to feel that way, ever again.
[She says the last part a little quietly.
She said a little more than she meant to. She blinks, though -- then the smile comes into focus again, and then she nods.]
...that's true, though. When you've left behind a legacy like that, you've really made a mark. Happiness, sadness... it all stays around, no matter what, doesn't it?
no subject
I think so, yes. History's fascinating like that. Even though there is so much about the past that we can't reconstruct properly, everything has still left a trace. And how we look at those traces today often tells us something about our modern world as well.
I like it a lot. Throughout the centuries mankind has tried time and time again to achieve what you are trying to achieve here - the true peaceful coexistence. And time and time, everything fell apart and was rebuild. All new, yet in parts always the same. History has a lot to teach. And though mankind has always been the same, some brilliant minds really left their marks.
That kind of impact... It's harder to make now that digital communication has made the flow of information so widespread and easily accessible, but that doesn't mean it isn't worth striving for.
[ Though Miach is certainly still moving, this has turned into more of an impromptu lecture than a dance. History's always been her favourite subject, the one thing in school that she soaked up instead of getting bored with. Having someone willing to listen and truly engage has definitely opened the floodgates of thoughts. ]

[Nana tilts her head, then smiles a little. She realizes, of course, that Miach hasn't revised her opinion -- she doesn't think that Nana's goal is impossible. But... part of the fun is someone challenging her on that.
And, maybe, voicing some of Nana's inner worries.
She keeps up with the dancing, her pace recovering a little. She looks back at Miach, then she smiles a little. A different thought comes to mind.]
I'd count myself lucky to manage that. But... maybe it's something to strive for. Do you want that? To leave something behind like that, if you can?
no subject
[ But she doesn't know what, not yet, doesn't have the clear-cut solutions and means of protests she longs to have defined for herself. A roadblock and not one she's particularly proud of. ]
A small scar on this world that is mine alone. Whenever the appropriate time comes, I'll dedicate my all to achieving it.
no subject
[Then, whilst dancing, she declares:]
And... twirl!
[And Nana uses that dance training (and her height) to hold up her hand, and put Miach through a twirl.]
no subject
She takes the twirl in stride, elegantly turning herself until she comes back face to face with Nana. ]
You like dancing.
[ Not really a question so much as a statement. Twice the pity that Nana had been spending so much of the dance standing to the side. ]
no subject
I do! I've taken lessons, actually. And it comes in handy in plays.
[She beams.]
You're very good at it!
no subject
[ A normal thing to do for a daughter from a mildly good house. Miach should be pissed about how stereotypical it was to send her to piano lessons, but in the end, piano is not an unpleasant activity. ]
I watched youtube videos for the basic steps, I confess. Dancing is great though.
no subject
[And you can't beat a piano for trying out compositions, but she doesn't feel the need to go into that now.]
We should play together sometimes.
[There's a moment's thought, then she adds:]
The videos are great! I use them a lot. No instructor knows every style and step, after all. They really let you learn what you want.
no subject
She'd always imagined her friends (a nebulous future concept) would be like her, fighters against conformity and superficial kindness. Nana is anything but that. So really, it's almost frustrating that she's fun to spend time with.
All these considerations still running in the back of her head, Miach simply answers the invitation with an enigmatic smile. ]
And you can do it on your own schedule. I never particularly liked school - everyone has unique needs for their time management from the get-go. Trying to standardize that is only a compromise. I learn better when I can do it at home.
no subject
She's curious about the answer. Her head's tilted, a little, and she bobs it once.]
I've thought the same--ah, teachers are trying to do something very hard. Give one-on-one instruction to everyone at once. Though... the videos and the rest are hard for the very complicated dances. I don't think I could have learned to tango without an instructor to show me.
[Or other things. Swordfighting comes to mind.]
no subject
[ Though actually.... Miach pauses thoughtfully for a moment, and then issues a correction. ]
Unless they're making you dance with other students, naturally. Though in that event, I'd say you're teaching each other. Not unlike now.
[ After all, Miach gets to observe the moves of a proper dance training up close by dancing with Nana. ]
no subject
Ah, we are teaching each other, aren't we? I'm learning about your dancing style, and you're learning about mine. And I don't doubt I'll try a few of the things you've done in the future, too.
[And no one in any formal dance studio (at least, not to Nana's knowledge) has seen Miach's dancing before.]
no subject
[ Which she's... actually never really done before. There's been a lot of solo dancing and imaginary partners, but in the end... Miach has never had any friends. Not for lack of trying on the part of her classmates, but still.
Maybe transferring to Daybreak wasn't such a bad thing. She's certainly not as bored now that there are people she actually has taken an interest in. This realization makes her make up her mind. ]
A lot of fun, too. Since we're quite compatible in this regard, you're right that we should see about making music together as well.
no subject
[Maybe more than dancing, Nana thinks. She can't say she hasn't walked away from a conversation with Miach without learning something new. Or thinking about something new.
Which makes it easy for her to brighten, when Miach says they should practice together. She beams, then her nod comes quickly.]
Mm! I'd be happy to!
no subject
You're also very good at tempting.
[ It's teasing, but really, maybe someone else here should have worn a devil costume.
The current song fades out and Miach can feel her legs getting tired. She doesn't feel like bolting from the conversation like their first meeting, not at all, but she does feel like taking a dancefloor break.
Signaling this, she detaches herself from Nana with a little curtsy. ]
no subject
...okay. Maybe a little.
[It's how she gets people to go along with her.
Nana does a little bow at the waist to the curtsy -- and then she steps off the dance floor, letting out one of those long, satisfied breaths from a job well done. She absolutely was forming an opinion on how well she danced. She glances back, though, to see if Miach's following.
She did bolt last time, after all.]
no subject
Now I'm starving... Speaking of, I love what you did with the food decorations. A daring and controversial choice. It's super gross.
[ Even Miach finds it intuitively repulsing, but she's getting a good thrill from that. ]
sorry for delay! Thanksgiving was busy, company in town and all
[She knows a thing or two about illusions. She took a class on it. She grins, and then she keeps walking -- towards the food, if Miach will have it.
She beams at the... compliment?
She'll call it a compliment.]
We did an impressive job, didn't we? Oh--but it tastes good. It's really novel, actually... you bite it, and the food has the texture and taste of something delicious! It's really at odds with its appearance.
and then I immediately got delayed myself, rl is a cruel misstress
But I'd also need to go home and get a sandwich mid-evening, so this is better. My brain doesn't do too well without a lot of nutrition. I get drowsy.
[ And thus she'll immediately start packing a plate chock full of whatever disgusting things she can find - while making a face. Sometimes being edgy just means being a bit of a masochist. ]
it sure is...... I've spent the last dayish learning about legal crap for work z_z
[She loads her own plate up with a few things. They look awful. Like entrails, mostly.
(She knows they taste good.)]
oh god.... may you find strength
[ Sillier Nana, mysterious stranger. Wherefore art thou? Silliness isn't the primary trait Miach associates with Nana so far, but that only makes this question more interesting. ]
no subject
[It was, really, not coherent.]

And here I thought the lives of frogs were pretty straight-forward. What are they hiding?
